RUSSELL — On Wed., April 5, Russell Public School held a surprise assembly to honour Russell Public School preschool teacher Melinda Wright and Principal Mhairi Rowland, whose quick and appropriate actions saved the life of KinderCare child Nora Derouin.

About a month ago, three-year-old Nora had a seizure and stopped breathing, but Wright and Rowland reacted quickly, providing CPR and getting the child to hospital.

Russell Mayor Pierre Leroux, Councillor Cindy Saucier, Derek Casselman of UCDSB Communications and Nora’s mother Michelle Derouin came to the school. Leroux presented certificates to Wright and Rowland, praising their quick thinking and how they remained calm in an emergency.

Later Wright said she had been a preschool teacher for nine years, and of course had CPR and First Aid training every year, and had never experienced an emergency before. Both Wright and Rowland were surprised and pleased by the recognition.
