RUSSELL–The war medal which had belonged to Pvt. Hector Ovide Filion of Embrun, the first local resident to enlist in the First World War, and which was found being sold on eBay, was presented to Russell Legion Branch 372 president Jeff O’Neill by the Russell and District Historical Society on Mon., Nov. 9, at the Keith Boyd Museum in Russell.

A capacity crowd filled the church building of the museum for the presentation, which was preceded by brief descriptions from Diane Wade and Villager reporter Candice Vetter of how the medal came to be purchased, and a stirring talk by Shaun Hoag, veteran of Afghanistan.

Dorothy Kinkaid of the Society then presented the medal and a shadow box to mount it in to O’Neill who said the Legion will display it proudly and invited everyone to look at it.
