RUSSELL/EMBRUN—This year’s Terry Fox Run on Sun., Sept. 20 between Russell and Embrun will honour late Russell Township Mayor J.P. St. Pierre. Organizer of the run, Cindy Saucier, now a municipal councillor, said, “He was there each and every year and will be missed at this year’s event.”

As Mayor and formerly as a councillor St. Pierre had been a participant, including putting on a belly-dance hip scarf for the Zumba workout.

Russell and Embrun community and business partners continue to pull together to make the run the great success it is. Last year alone almost $15,000 was raised from it.

Saucier, who has organized the run for over 20 years, is the driving force behind the effort along with her volunteers, Donna Lafrance, Judy McFaul, Margrit Cholowski, Danielle Pilon, Ally Villeneuve, Linda Duhamel, Connor and Mike Saucier, most of whom have been with her from the start. Local support in the form of runners, walkers and wheelers has always been high and grows annually.

Business participation includes warmups by Zumba instructors Leanne McLean and Caroline Rail. A new participant is the Village Bakery in Embrun which will supply cake for a celebration at each end, and there will be a prize for the first runner in at each end. Matt Guertin of Fitness by Design has donated a fitness prize to each competitor.

Live music in Embrun by the local band, Happy to Be Here, is being powered by Euphoria (at the Embrun start) and the café is also selling a Terry Fox smoothie and donating part of the proceeds to The Terry Fox Foundation.

There will be facepainting for the kids at each end and the halfway point offers a washroom near the dog park and refreshments. Thain Dental Clinic will open its doors so washrooms and water fountain will be available there. The clinic is wheelchair accessible.

Other community sponsors giving supplies, funds and volunteers include Scotiabank Russell, Chez Lili/Labelle for the tents, Russell and Embrun Fire Departments for crossing everyone safely, paramedics on bikes, Russell Foodland, Giant Tiger, Russell Township, Russell Lions, local newspapers The Villager and The Chesterville Record, schools, Curves Embrun, Les Eau Villageois, and more.

The Russell start is behind Mother Teresa School at the trail parking lot on Concession St. and the Embrun start is beside Euphoria on Notre Dame St. on the trail. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.
